WHO WAS JOSEPH PILATES (1883 - 1967) AND WHY DOES HE GET HIS OWN DAY?

He was a German emigree to the USA, an inventor with over 26 patents, a writer and teacher of movement who left a legacy of improved vitality, posture and self-control for hundreds of students. He originally called his system “Contrology” but in the years since it has become known as Pilates and grown wildly in popularity.

WHY ALL THE PATENTS?

At the centre of the system of Pilates is the original matwork, which uses few or no props. However, Jo devised unique equipment to assist his students to access and improve the often highly challenging matwork exercises. The most famous of these inventions is the Reformer which can be used to wonderful effect in group classes.

SO WHAT IS STUDIO PILATES?

Our Studio Pilates offer is close to how Pilates was originally taught by Jo himself – in small groups or individually, using the full complement of the apparatus he designed. The system is a powerful and unique modality that builds exquisite awareness and control.

MEANINGFUL MOVEMENT FOR A MEANINGFUL LIFE

The basis of Jo’s life’s work was that the repetition of precise movement and breathing required concentration and ultimately produced control of both the body and the mind. He taught and practised his method his entire life and enjoyed remarkable vitality and strength until he died of emphysema at age 82 (he habitually smoked cigars). In this image he is 80 years old and still in formidable shape.
